Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to fish in
Mosquito Lagoon?

There are two answers.

1. Now
2. Anytime

There are some factors that determine to some extent whether on a particular day the bite will be on.  Generally these factors are not seasonal, however.

Weekdays can be preferable due to less boat traffic but we have had many slamming weekend days.  Generally, we start our trips at daybreak.

Capt. Karty will provide afternoon trips.  In cool weather, an early start is not crucial and trips may be started later as the temperature warms.

When and how
do we pay?

We will hold your credit card number as a guarantee deposit for your trip.  Capt. Karty prefers cash or a check made out to Capt. Karty Sills, payable at the end of the trip.

We do accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards as payment if we must.  The fees they charge really sock it to us because we are not able to “swipe” your card and we are trying to keep our rates as low as we can.  We need to know by the day before your trip if you plan to pay with your credit card so I can have the transaction ready.  It is a real inconvenience to try to get approval at the ramp while trying to fillet your fish and take the boat out of the water.  If you pull the card out with no advance warning, we reserve the right to charge and extra $25 for the extra time it takes.

Cancellation Policy

Capt. Karty just wants to fish.  That said, we will certainly attempt to rebook your date.  If we cannot, we reserve the right to charge up to $100 per trip cancelled.  If we turned down a trip due to your reservation, you will be charged the $100.  If you fail to call or show up, you will definitely be charged the $100.  In fifteen years of business, we have only charged for cancellation a couple of times.

The weather on the days I booked with Capt. Karty were less than desirable but he never failed to put me on fish."
-Mitch Ruff of Riverview, Florida

“Laura, Brandon & I had a ‘Blast’.  What a finale when the shuttle went off.  But better than that was the quality fishin’ we got in.  That 6 lb. trout was a dream catch for Brandon.  We can’t wait until next July.  You’ll be seeing us again.  Thanks.”
-Greg, Laura, and Brandon Oneil of Valparaiso, Indiana

What about the weather?

Please do not put much faith in local weather forecasts.  They are talking percentages and a large percentage of our trips are conducted without rain or foul weather.

Trips may be postponed an hour or two when warranted to allow for the occasional morning shower.  Karty finds that trips after morning showers are predominantly great trips.

When you book a trip, we will hold your credit card number as a $100 deposit.  It is rare that we do anything with your number except write it down.   Every time, over the past fifteen years, that we have cancelled a trip due to weather the day before, it turned out to be nice, sometimes beautiful and definitely fishable.

The weather forecasts here are notoriously wrong.  If you have made a reservation and you want to cancel due to weather, we recommend that you wait until the morning of the trip.

Karty gets up in the wee hours to prepare for his trips.  If the weather, at that point, looks nasty, he does not want to fish in it and he will postpone or cancel if necessary.  If you cancel the night before, it will cost you $100.

If the weather is truly not fishable, Karty will cancel on the day of the trip and you will owe nothing.  In fifteen years, we have never heard from an angler that they felt they should not have been fishing due to unsafe conditions.

We have called some anglers on the morning of their trip and told them that we thought it was going to be a weather challenged day and they could cancel only to be told that they would be at the ramp as agreed if the Captain would be.

Trips are weather cancelable by the Captain only,
Only on the day of your trip.

"Karty knew exactly where to find fish.  Even with bad weather conditions we still caught fish. Thank you both for the awesome fishing experience. Fishing topwater is one of my favorite ways to catch bass but reds beat them hands down."
